Wallpaper and paint are two of the most common wall coverings for homes. A less common option is to combine them together. Painting on or over wallpaper is completely possible, but there are some steps you should take beforehand. When you decide to paint over wallpaper, understand that some challenges may arise. If you are trying to save time, painting over the wallpaper is a smart choice, however, the challenges you may come across could cost you just as much time as removing the wallpaper.
Just like any painting project, prep work is the only way to achieve a professional finish. Continue reading to learn more about painting over wallpaper.
1- Clean The Wallpaper Before Painting
All painting projects must start with a clean surface. Whether you are painting wood, wallpaper, or laminate, removing dust from the surface will ensure the paint adheres to the surface. Cleaning the surface is the best way to achieve a smooth finish as all small debris will be removed before painting. Use a mild soap and a damp cloth to clean the surface, and let it dry completely before applying a primer or paint.
2- Utilize A Primer
Primer helps the paint adhere to a surface for longer, which is especially important to paint over wallpaper. Oil or shellac-based primers work best for wallpaper because it will keep the adhesive from underneath from affecting the paint’s appearance. Applying the primer according to the directions will keep the wallpaper in place while you apply the paint over top.
3- Don’t Paint Over Peeling Wallpaper
If the wallpaper is peeling, bubbling, or lifting, don’t apply paint over the wallpaper. Damage to the wallpaper can change how the paint looks once it is dry and will lead to chipping and flaking of the paint. If the wallpaper has a texture or has bubbled in weird places, this could affect the overall finish of the paint.

Wallpaper can also have prominent seams that you need to pay attention to. If the seams still stick up after applying a primer, you may need to sand them down or use a little bit of joint compound.
Which Paint Can You Use On Wallpaper?
Any high-quality paint will work to cover the wallpaper. If you are covering bold prints or the wallpaper is a bold color, using a primer first will allow you to utilize fewer coats. Any wall paint with a gloss or matte finish will work to cover the wallpaper.
Can You Remove Paint From Wallpaper?
Even with the right blocking and tapping, paint can still land where you least expect it. Whether you get splotches of paint on an unintended section or you are trying to remove paint from a previous owner, it can be removed with special precision. Once the paint has dried, you can utilize 91-92% isopropyl alcohol to remove small spots of paint from the wallpaper.
If the entire wall is covered with paint and wallpaper, it may be hard to remove the paint completely. Homeowners can weaken the color of the paint and remove heavy sections to then apply a more even layer of new paint.
For wet paint, use a damp sponge or cloth to dab off the paint. Be careful not to scrub as this will push the paint into the fibers of the wallpaper and cause a stain. Large sections of paint may be difficult to remove. If you can not successfully remove the paint with either of these methods, you will need to remove the wallpaper.
